The Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction
Alcoholism is a dangerous and prevalent disease. While not contagious, a person can be genetically predisposed to being an alcoholic. However, even if both parents were alcoholics it is possible to avoid the disease with the right precautionary measures. If you are concerned about yourself or a loved one you should first understand the symptoms of alcohol addiction. The first and most obvious symptom is heavy or regular drinking.
For example if you notice that you drink every single night, or get drunk every weekend, you may be addicted to alcohol. Or if you notice a friend who always seems to have a beer in his hand, it is possible he suffers from alcoholic addiction. Many alcoholics are hungover on a regular basis and miss work because of it. Hangovers are characterized by headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and a host of other unpleasant effects caused by acute intoxication. For some, this would be enough to turn them off of booze. For an alcoholic, it is unpleasant for sure but not a deterrent when it comes to drinking again.
The older, more experienced alcoholic does not usually get a hangover, but they drink a lot. This is a person who you see drinking all day but who never really looks sloppily drunk. They seem to function reasonably well at home and work, but their lifestyle is still a risk to themselves and others. Chronic heavy drinking can cause liver cancer, cirrhosis, heart disease and other problems. Not to mention the dangers posed by drinking and driving. Alcoholism can also damage relationships and break apart families. This is why there are organizations for loved ones of alcoholics, like Al-Anon and Alateen.
No matter how long an alcoholic has been drinking, they can turn the other way and get help for their alcohol addiction. While it may not be possible to heal all the damage to a liver scarred by cirrhosis or cure cancer most people can make a full recovery from alcoholic liver disease if they abstain from drinking. This means you can prevent these deadly liver diseases simply by refusing to drink alcohol. There are classes, programs, clinics, meetings and more designed to provide support to the recovering alcoholic. In other words, the help is there for you – all you have to do is accept it.
