The Process of Alcohol Detoxification

As the name suggests, alcohol detoxification is the process of removing alcohol toxins from the body. In a clinical setting, it is more than that. Often benzodiazepenes are prescribed in an inpatient setting to help ease the discomfort of withdrawal. How uncomfortable alcohol detox will be is different from person to person. Some drinkers may feel very few ill effects while others may have life threatening delirium tremens. It all depends on how long the person has been drinking and what stage of alcoholism they are in.

The first stage of alcoholism is usually the easiest to treat because there are few to no physical side effects when consumption of alcohol is discontinued. The patient may feel irritable, anxious, and may have a craving for alcohol. As mentioned previously, benzodiazepenes like Valium, Xanax and Klonopin are the most common medicines for these symptoms but may not be appropriate for everyone. Sometimes first stage alcoholics can find treatment on an outpatient basis and with the help of their physician and may or may not need medication.

This may include attending AA meetings, or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. There is another group called RR, for Rational Recovery that some prefer. You might also want to consider counseling with a therapist who specializes in substance abuse. While everyone can't kick the bottle as an outpatient some people can. There are many different things you can expect when giving up drinking.

Hangovers are often the worst physical effects of first stage alcohol detox. A hangover is the name for how you feel the morning after drinking heavily. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, headache, shakiness, dizziness, anxiety and more. While heavy, everyday drinkers do not usually get hangovers, they are highly likely to suffer from severe withdrawal symptoms if they are not detoxed under strict medical supervision.

During alcohol detoxification, there may be other side effects as well like sweating, palpitations, shaking and insomnia. If you or a loved one suffer from middle to late stage alcoholism, detox should be done at an inpatient facility especially for alcoholics. This can take anywhere from a few days to longer than a month. Once the patient is admitted and evaluated a treatment plan will be devised for them to follow, both inside the hospital and once they are released. Your doctor may want you to attend meetings or classes, and/or follow up on a prescription regimen.
