What to Expect in Alcohol Rehabilitation
If you are preparing to enter an alcoholic rehabilitation center, give yourself a big pat on the back. You've come a very long way towards winning the battle against alcoholism already, by recognizing the problem and seeking help for it. Alcohol rehab can be scary at first, but once you understand the routines and procedures things will become easier for you to cope with. There are all kinds of rehab facilities around the country, some located at large hospitals. Others are private facilities. The cost for your stay may be covered under your insurance policy if you are referred by a doctor, but check with your insurance agent to be sure.
When you arrive at the facility, your personal items will be checked and at most facilities your shoes will be taken from you and replaced with booties. You will not be permitted to have a cell phone and most rehab facilities do not allow patients to smoke anymore. During your first few days, you will be evaluated by a team of doctors, therapists and nurses. After this period of what might be acute withdrawal, your treatment plan will begin. This will be determined by the specific problems you entered the hospital for and the data they've collected since your arrival.
One part of treatment in rehab is nutrition. The facility makes sure all patients are fed three nutritious meals a day, which is something many alcoholics don't get at home. Another important aspect of treatment is counseling, both alone and in group format. There may also be family sessions where you attend with members of your family. Visiting hours usually occur twice daily but once again this depends on the particular rules and regulations of the facility. These rules and regulations should be clearly explained to you when you check in, and there should be forms for you to sign.
Sometimes at alcohol rehabilitation you will have your own room, however you may have a roommate. The rooms are similar to hospital beds but instead of a television in each one there may be a community TV room. The center may also have daily events like movies, games or other activities for patients to enjoy. While a stay at an alcohol rehab facility isn't exactly a luxury resort, you are doing something very good for yourself. Any unpleasantness experienced during the rehab process is well worth the end result of maintaining your sobriety.
