Types of Alcohol Treatment
If you or someone you love is suffering from alcoholism, you should know there are several different types of alcohol treatment. The type of alcoholism treatment required depends on a variety of factors including lifestyle, drinking habits, health, personal preference and more. No two people, or alcoholics for that matter, are alike. So what works for one person may be the wrong thing for you. The good thing is that you can try a treatment method, then try a different one if the first one is not right for your needs.
For example, one method for the treatment of alcoholism is inpatient rehabilitation. This is either voluntary or involuntary, depending on the circumstances. Some who have been the cause of alcohol related accidents or been arrested for driving under the influence are forced by law to go through inpatient treatments. Others are committed by their families under a court order, while others enter inpatient rehab on their own. For the alcoholic who is still functioning at work and home inpatient rehabilitation may not be the best choice.
Some alcohol treatment programs are outpatient. They range from extensive to occasional, depending on the severity of your problem and how much help you want or need. For example, there are outpatient programs that take several hours every day of the week and those that only meet once a week for an hour. Often alcoholics who have been through inpatient therapy will continue with outpatient therapy after being discharged.
Another avenue for the treatment of alcoholism is medical help. Your doctor may send you to a specialist or treat you for your problem themselves. For example, you might be prescribed a medication for reducing alcohol cravings. Sometimes people self-medicate with alcohol, and if your doctor thinks this is what you are doing he or she may decide you need an antidepressant or mood stabilizer depending on your diagnosis. Not every alcoholic needs medication, some may require a different type of alcoholic treatment.
As you can see, there are many treatments for alcoholism. Lots of recovering alcoholics attend AA meetings. This stands for Alcoholics Anonymous and is a group devoted to helping recovering alcoholics maintain their sobriety. Treating alcoholism can be a struggle, but it can be overcome. Talk to a medical professional today about alcohol treatment. Obtaining the right kind of help such as inpatient or outpatient treatment for alcoholism can literally save a life.
