Alcoholism Denial – More Common than You Think
The problem of alcoholism denial is extremely common. If you have a loved one who is an alcoholic but refuses to see it, then you have first hand experience with denial. You may even be in denial yourself about your drinking. Alcoholics use this to avoid the subject at hand, which is the fact they have a drinking problem. Denial can come in the form of blaming other people or circumstances for their drinking, or in flat out refusal to admit their problem even exists. The reason they do this is so they can keep drinking, because this is what an alcoholic is driven to do.
An intervention is sometimes planned for the alcoholic who refuses to admit they have a problem and continues to drink. Problematic drinking interferes with work, school, relationships, health – it is not difficult to tell a problem drinker from a person who has a social drink once in awhile. Sometimes an intervention is the only way to get the person's attention. During an intervention, the alcoholic listens to friends and family talk about their alcoholism and will be asked to get help. Usually this means time spent at a detox facility for alcoholics.
Sometimes during an intervention, there will be consequences imposed for the alcoholic who refuses to get help. For example, an alcoholic clinging to denial or one who refuses to listen may have family members who refuse to help them or even see them anymore if they do not seek help. Sometimes it takes total abandonment to shock an alcoholic into getting help, but luckily many others respond to their family's pleas and finally admit they do have a problem and are willing to go to rehab. Inpatient rehabilitation is the safest way for a severe alcoholic to detox.
Along with alcoholism denial, other symptoms go with this disease. An alcoholic may have health problems from drinking, such as liver damage or pancreas inflammation. They may miss work, damage relationships and behave in a way that is unlike them. The first step is to stop denying that alcohol is a problem and take an honest look at what is going on with themselves. Until an alcoholic can do this, it is unlikely forced treatment will work. Many addicts go to rehab many times before finally kicking their addictions.
