Understanding Alcoholism Disease
Alcoholism disease may sound like a false statement to some, but the recognition of alcoholism as a disease is widely accepted in our society. The definition of an alcoholic is someone who drinks to the point of negative consequences and continues to do so. This might be a person who drinks only on weekends but binges every time. Or a person who drinks steadily all day, every day. While the drinking habits among alcoholics may differ, the underlying compulsion to consume the alcohol regardless of the consequences is the same.
The disease of alcoholism is one that does not just get better on its own. As a matter of fact, as time goes by the disease gets worse and can end in death. There are several ways an alcoholic can drink themselves to death. There is acute alcohol poisoning, liver cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, fatal accidents caused by drunk drivers, and more. The early symptoms of severe alcoholism may include fatty liver and alcoholic liver disease. Sometimes inflammation of the pancreas can also result.
When you or a loved one experience these warning signs, it is time to stop drinking because to continue to drink may be fatal. See your doctor about any alcohol related symptoms you have. Not all alcoholics have physical problems. Some have hangovers, but that's about it. Even so, it it still crucial they get help before it's too late. As with any disease, early detection gives you a better chance of survival, and alcoholism is no different.
By recognizing the signs of alcoholism in yourself or a loved one early, you can halt the problem before more damage is done. Johns Hopkins University released a widely published alcoholic quiz that you may want to take. However even without a test you probably can determine whether or not you have a problem with drinking. The hard part for many people is admitting the problem and going for help the first time. However overcoming denial is a big step when it comes to recovery.
If you think you have alcoholism disease, tell your doctor. He or she will perform a physical examination and will want to know all about your drinking habits. It is very important that you are honest, even if you feel embarrassed. That way your doctor can decide what they feel is the best course of action to help you, whether it is a stay at an inpatient clinic or registration with an outpatient program.
