The Wide Variety of Alcoholism Effects
There are many alcoholism effects that can be found in the health and lives of alcoholics. First, let's look at the causes of alcoholism. Sometimes, alcoholism can be genetic. This means if the disease runs in your family you may be predisposed to it. It does not mean you are doomed to be an alcoholic, you have the choice to not drink. Other causes include environment, age when the drinking started, frequency of alcohol consumption and more. Sometimes there is no one cause that can be pinpointed.
Just as there are many causes of alcoholism, there are also many effects of alcoholism. Alcoholics may suffer from debilitating hangovers which keep them from going to work or school. They may have mood swings, emotional difficulties and relentless alcohol cravings. Some alcoholics get into trouble because of their drinking, for example they may be arrested for DUI/DWI or for something like public intoxication. Alcoholism has long term effects on the body and on relationships with family and friends.
Alcoholics might say or do things they would not normally do when intoxicated. For example they may be sexually promiscuous or abusive to others. This may cause resentment, hurt feelings or worse in marriages and in families. When raising children, one or both parents being alcoholics can cause emotional difficulties and acting out in the child. This is the most important thing a problem drinker needs to know, that their drinking doesn't just affect them but the people in their lives as well. Even if the effects are minimal, the damage to your health from chronic drinking can hurt you and those that love you.
Many alcoholism effects are physical in nature. There may be bloodshot eyes, redness of the nose, swelling and bloating of the face and body, nausea, vomiting, pale skin, heart palpitations and worst of all, liver damage. This can range from fatty liver, which is reversible, to cirrhosis, which is not. Also drinking too much alcohol can cause problems with blood pressure and may contribute to heart disease. While you may have heard a glass of wine per day is healthy, any amount above that negates the positive effects. If you think you would be unable to stop at one serving of alcohol per day, you should probably not drink at all.
