Am I am Alcoholic? Here's How to Tell
If you find yourself waking up in a haze after a drunken night and wondering, am I an alcoholic then you are not alone. There are millions of people that have some kind of drinking problem and many different avenues through which you can seek help. The first step is to take a hard and honest look at yourself and your drinking habits. Start keeping track of your drinking to see if any patterns emerge. You may also want to quiz yourself about whether or not your drinking has had any negative effects.
A hangover is not a sure sign you are an alcoholic, but it does mean you imbibed more than your body could handle. If you are suffering from hangovers on a weekly basis or more often than that you may have a problem. Have you ever missed work because of a hangover? If so, then you can count that as problematic. It is a disease that progresses in severity, meaning if the alcoholic continues drinking they will become worse over time. Alcoholism can lead to broken relationships, health problems and even death. Just take a look at how many drunk drivers kill innocent people or themselves around the world each day. Even if you don't ever drink and drive, you could suffer from alcoholic liver disease or worse, cirrhosis of the liver. Fatal alcohol poisoning is another risk for heavy drinkers.
When it comes to alcoholism, fact of the matter is that it's better to be safe than sorry. If you suspect you have a problem, head to your doctor or an alcohol counselor immediately. They can teach you more about alcoholism and help you answer your question of 'am I am alcoholic?' If the answer is yes, treatment options will be discussed. There are many types of treatment, including outpatient, inpatient, alternative medicine and traditional medicine. What works for one person may be worthless to another, so find which type of treatment best suits your personality, your life and your level of alcoholism.
