The Stages of Alcoholism
There are different stages of alcoholism you should be aware of if you or someone you love is an alcoholic. Understanding the alcoholism stages can also help you determine how severe the problem is. Of course only a doctor can determine this, but educating yourself can help you have a foundation of knowledge to start with. Alcoholism is a progressive disease, which means it gets worse as time goes by. While there is no cure, there are treatments, and it is possible for an alcoholic to gain full recovery.
Alcoholism stages start off with the first stage. This is the stage where the alcoholic no longer drinks every now and then, or just a little at social events. They begin drinking to feel the euphoric effects caused by the consumption of alcohol. In this stage, an alcoholic may have worked themselves up to five or more drinks per day, but is still functioning as a member of society. There may be marked changes in their behavior or you may notice nothing at all.
In the middle stage of alcoholism, the affected individual may experience more trouble hiding the fact they have a problem. There may be blackouts, hangovers, even trouble with the law from being intoxicated in public or worse, drinking and driving. The alcoholic may say or do things to loved ones they don't mean. Their drinking progresses to a point where they can no longer seem to control it and there may be time missed from work or school due to this problem. At this stage, it is crucial to get help before the disease gets any worse.
Late stage alcoholism is normally characterized by drinking most of every day. The alcoholic cannot usually not hold a job at this point, and may go on drinking binges that last for days or weeks. Because their tolerance is so high, they cannot get drunk like they used to, so they keep drinking more and more to try and capture the euphoria. Physical side effects of late stage alcoholism include liver damage, cirrhosis of the liver and delirium tremens, which are convulsive hallucinations that can be fatal. Also cancer of the liver, mouth and throat are more common for late stage alcoholics.
Now that you are familiar with the stages of alcoholism, you can make an informed decision about your own drinking habits and decide whether or not you need to seek professional help.
