Dressing Your Table For A Dinner Party
Wednesday, April 13th, 2011Whether its for a special celebration, birthday, anniversary or simple Saturday night, if you’re having a dinner party its worth making an effort not only with the food but with the dining table as well. There a few simple touches that will show that you’ve not only thought about what your guests may require but also to add to the overall mood and ambiance of the evening.
Always have a tablecloth: White is always a safe option and is very classic choice. However if your home is bright and modern a bold colour might have more impact. Keep your colour scheme in mind, this should come from the other furniture or furnishings in the room and be of a contrasting or complementary colour, reflect this in the napkins and plates.
Consider the lighting: Overhead lights may be too harsh for an evening dinner party. Lights should be dimmed, or just switch on lamps or consider just having candlelight. Glass candle holders shouldn’t be so big as to crowd the place settings or obstruct peoples eye line.
Centrepieces & Table Decorations: These can be as plain or as elaborate as you choose but should reflect the theme of the evening and finish off the table nicely. Consider every aspect from the placements to the centerpiece and don’t be afraid to use your imagination, whether its with the type of floral centerpiece or place cards.
Make the cutlery and glasses to the food: Consider what food you are serving and make sure that you give guests the appropriate cutlery to eat it with. In addition after dinner drinks should be in the appropriate Tumblers or brandy glasses.
To avoid any last minute rushing around, lay the table before you start cooking, this will minimise any last minute panic. Make sure that room is left for any condiments or serving dishes, and that guests have enough space to be comfortable.
Although the main thing that is important in all this is that you’re having a lovely evening with friends, it doesn’t hurt to consider these few factors to make sure that it will be a night to remember.
